Teaching Experience

Birsa Chatterjee is an internationally touring saxophonist, clarinetist, vocalist, and educator based in New York and New Jersey. A graduate of the Juilliard School and Oberlin Conservatory, Birsa has performed and recorded with world-renowned artists including Billy Hart, Bria Skonberg, and Edmar Castañeda, and has appeared at major festivals and venues across the United States, Europe, South America, and Asia.

A dedicated educator and mentor, Birsa has serves as the Senior Manager of Student Success and Director of the Summer Workshop at Jazz House Kids, one of the nation’s top pre-college jazz education programs. He works closely with jazz legend Christian McBride and leads initiatives to support the next generation of young artists through mentorship, curriculum development, and live performance opportunities. Birsa has also served on the education team at Jazz at Lincoln Center, and was selected to travel to the Middle East through Oberlin’s Global Jazz Initiative, where he conducted masterclasses and cultural exchange workshops as well as having conducted workshops in India and across the tristate area.

Birsa maintains an active private studio of saxophone and clarinet players of all levels—from beginner to advanced—both virtually and in person. His teaching approach is grounded in deep listening, strong fundamentals, artistic individuality, and cultural awareness. With experience across jazz, Indian classical music, and American popular music, Birsa helps students not only improve their technique and improvisation, but also find their voice and confidence as creative musicians.
